18 October 2013

Press Release
The Office of the Council of Ministers

on 18 October 2013, Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Sok An, Minister in Charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, and British Ambassador Mark Gooding discussed the following topics:

·         The two countries look to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the next five years, including in the areas of judicial reform, trade and investment. They recalled the visit by Britain’s Minister for Trade and Investment Lord Green to Cambodia in June to improve bilateral trade and investments, which has led to several developments.

·         Cambodia welcomes the UK’s announcement of a new contribution of USD 0.5 million for the ECCC coming on the top of $3 million already contributed by the UK last year, and this will be allocated to the international side of the ECCC.

·         The UK welcomes Cambodia’s announcement of its additional new funding to the national side of the ECCC to stabilize the court’s financial situation this year. Cambodia and the UK are also pleased with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s call for donors to provide new contributions to the ECCC.

·         The UK is offering four scholarships for Cambodian students to study in the UK for master degrees of one year in various fields next year.

·         The UK is also announcing a new project of support to Cambodia’s Royal Academy for Judicial Professions, under which British academics would be dispatched to train Cambodian judges and legal officers.

·         Both sides share the view on the desirability of further dialogues between the winning CPP and the opposition CNRP in the interests of Cambodia and her people.

·         They also agree on the need for reform for the Cambodia’s next elections, now under preparation by competent authorities.
End.
