10th ASEM Summit Milan - 16/17 October 2014


The 10th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit was chaired by the President of the European Council and hosted by the Government of Italy in the Italian city of Milan.
The theme of the 10th ASEM Summit "Responsible Partnership for Sustainable Growth and Security" - reflected the enlarging scope of the EU-Asia relationship. The meeting provided a key opportunity to convey a strong message of commitment to Asia.
Mongolia will host the 11th ASEM Summit in 2016 and the 12th ASEM Foreign Ministers' meeting (ASEM FMM12) will take place in Luxembourg on 5-6 November 2015.

Retreat Session - Enhancing Dialogue and Cooperation between Europe and Asia and Future Direction of ASEM
The retreat session gave the leaders the opportunity to exchange views on regional and international issues and discuss the future direction of ASEM.
A specific focus was put on how to tackle the root causes of security threats and on fighting terrorism. The situations in the Middle East, Syria and Iraq as well as in both continents, including Ukraine and the Korean peninsula were also discussed.
Leaders recognised that the recent developments have a direct impact on international and regional peace and security,but also on the economic development and future prosperity of Europe and Asia.

First plenary session - promoting financial and economic cooperation through enhanced Europe-Asia connectivity
At the first plenary session, leaders focused on ways to enhance financial and economic cooperation:trade and investments are key for growth and jobs. Leaders committed to structural reforms both in Europe and Asia to strenghten the global economic and financial outlook.
Leaders also discussed connectivity and called for improved transport, as well as digital, linksbetween Europe and Asia. Their aim is to make it easier to move for goods, capital, services and persons along the so called "New Silk Road".
Second plenary session - Europe-Asia partnership in addressing global matters in an inter-connected world
The second session was devoted to synergies on global issues such as:  
  • addressing climate change ahead of the climate conference in Paris in 2015
  • efforts undertaken to reach the Millennium Development Goals and the post-2015 sustainable development agenda
  • human rights, disaster management and energy security 
Bilateral meeting - EU-ASEAN leaders meeting
Bilateral meeting - President Van Rompuy and President Barroso meet Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan
They discused the status of negotiations on the Strategic Partnership and the Free Trade Agreement. and foreign policy issues in their respective neighbourhood in Ukraine and in East Asia.

Bilateral meeting - President Van Rompuy and President Barroso meet Li Keqiang, Premier of the People’s Republic of China to discuss EU-China relations, as well as global and regional issues. 
The EU-China Strategic Partnership, trade and investment relationships, the situtation in Ukraine and in the Middle-East, as well as global negotiations on climate change were on the agenda.

Background info on ASEM

ASEM was created in 1996 as a forum for dialogue and cooperation between Europe and Asia.
Every two years, ASEM Heads of State and Government meet at a summit to set ASEM's priorities. These Summits are held alternatively in Asia and Europe.

Related events

A number of important related events took place in the run-up of the summit. Beyond government-level meetings, ASEM also brings together members of parliament, the business sector, civil society, academia and the media by fostering people-to-people contacts.
