Joint Statement by Cambodian Government Representative and The Representative of United Nations Secretary General

The Royal Government of Cambodia and the United Nations welcome the recent discussions in Phnom Penh between H.E. Deputy Prime Minister Sok An and the U.N. Secretary-General’s Special Expert for United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials, Ambassador David Scheffer. Critical issues confronting the administration of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) were addressed constructively during these talks.

The ECCC is achieving historic objectives for the Cambodian people and for international criminal justice.  The Government and the United Nations reaffirm their support for the significant work of the ECCC and the critical need to sustain sufficient financial assistance so that the ECCC can work on Case 002 as part of the overall mandate of the Court.

The Government and the United Nations are deeply grateful for the substantial support provided by the international community to date to stabilize the budget of the Court.   There are urgent needs to meet at this time.  The Government and the United Nations call upon the international community, including Cambodia’s partners in ASEAN, to provide further critical financial support so that there is no further delay in the payment of salaries for the national staff.
